Christ in Glory: Second Cartoon
Sutherland, Graham (1903-1980)
1954-1955
oil and gouache (?)
The Iliffe Collection. Presented by Lord Iliffe of Yattendon in 1964
VA.1974.50.54
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum
This design was ready by January 1955. The cathedral committee approved it as the final cartoon, but Sutherland was still dissatisfied with it. Unlike the first and final designs, this design has no mandorla (halo) around the figure of Christ, and the arms stretched forwards in rather awkward perspective. In September 1956 Sutherland began a final Cartoon which he hoped would be ready for weaving by Christmas. In November he was informed that the colour of the cathedral's interior had been changed from grey-pink to off-white. Sutherland accordingly greatly brightened up the green of the background. The final Cartoon is now in the cathedral treasury.
