A sampler on finely woven linen made by Mary Cotton aged 9 on 30th April, 1836.The text reads 'Wisdom is the principal thing therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding'. This is a quote from the Bible, Proverbs 4:7 and highlights that understanding is more important than acquiring things, whether it is possessions, friends or knowledge.
