This is a Daguerrotype photographic portrait of Charles Bray, probably dating from around 1849. It is mounted in a gold coloured oval shaped mount and set into a hinged case lined with red velvet. It was made by Marcus and Samuel Root of Broadway, New York. Charles Bray was a ribbon weaver and newspaper owner in Coventry and hosted The Rosehill Circle of radicals and free-thinkers at his home. Mary Ann Evans became friends with him after her move to Coventry.
This portrait is part of the George Eliot Collection.
