Marriott was a builder who worked from Much Park St. (from 1852 - see CCA/2/3/312/27-31 passim; CCA/2/3/313/22) and lived at Stoneleigh Terrace. He was a trustee of Smith's Charity and, from 1860, of West Orchard Chapel (see CCA/2/3/168/29(endorsement),30,31,49,54: PA101/150/3); Marriott was also named as an executor under J.S. Whittem's 1882 draft wills (PA101/12/8,9) and became a trustee of that man's precursor James Whittem's in 1867 (PA56/104/4). In 1851 Marriott gained the tender for Hales St. baths (see PA56/127/2-10); in 1854, he built the steam flour-mill on the site of Swanswell House which still stood a century and a quarter later. Marriott submitted plans for alterations to Bayley's School in 1850 (see PA368/1/60), helped to improve its ventilation in 1858 (see PA368/8/15), and in 1874 discharged an apprentice received therefrom (PA368/134/171); see also PA368/63/62; PA368/65/40; PA368/77/38; PA368/81/34 (bills dated 1863, 1865, 1878 ). He sold land in 1851 on which was built a "Swanswell" inn (PA56/7/1.XV). Marriott was concerned with fixtures at 8, The Quadrant in 1862 (see PA101/8/389) and extended J. Rotherham's watch factory in 1875 (see PA101/7/341). Marriott was mayor in 1865-67; his building-business was taken over by C. Gray Hill (see PA99/10/8, an 1892 bill). Two of Marriott's buildings which survived in the city-centre were the former Lloyds Bank and Hertford St. Post Office which was built as Cash's warehouse.As first chairman of the Coventry Building Trades Employers, Marriott was later commemorated in Marriott House, Michaelmas Road; Coundon's Marriott Road is eponymous. Marriott was born at Bubbenhall, Warwickshire in 1818 and died aged 94 on 22 Jun 1913 (see PA56/131/1). He received a boy from Baker, Billing and Crow's School as an apprentice in 1864 (see PA26/9 fol.198), and had John Gardner thus from another source in 1872 (see PA64/fol.4). As mayor, in 1865 Marriott signed an illuminated address (PA104) given to his predecessor R.H. Minster (q.v.). In 1852 Marriott bought a Much Park St. house (see CCA/2/3/312/27,28,31: cf. PA171/30/1) but obtained more property there in 1856 (PA56/86/23). Built St. Mark's School. 1871 - see PA279/10/59. G. Hill,1886), 3129, 3150, 3162, 3167, 3207, 3221, 3226, 3233, 3235, 3239,3243, 3247, 3299, 5337,5369. Marriott became a Coventry Institute trustee in 1857 see PA436/8/2. Marriott developed Queen Street and Spencer Street, Hillfields from c.1852 - see PA466/4/2 p.236; PA466/4/5 fol.185; PA466/8/1 fol.267. He had 3, East Avenue, Stoke Park, 1864-86 (see PA466/6/2 fol.150) and was lessee of warehouses behind the site of Queen's Road, Butts (1862 - PA466/7/2 fol.295). On the city council 1855-58, 1863 - 1912. PA426/3/1 is Marriott's 1858 estimate for Bayley's School alterations. In 1855 he valued Warwick Ct., Gosford St - see PA440/6/31. In 1894 Marriott was appointed a General Municipal Charities trustee - see PA476/2/1. As a pipemaker, Marriott dealt with Bond's Hospital feoffees, 1848-49 - See PA54/129/13; PA54/130/21. In 1875 Marriott reported upon the state of Bubbenhall, Warwickshire cottages - see PA500/16/15. Qua Wheatley's Charity trustee, see PA1681/26/1: PA489/4/31/4; PA489/4/33/3-5. Qua Bablake Boys' Charity trustee, see PA489/4/33/7,9,12; PA489/4/34/5; PA489/4/37/1; PA489/4/41/6; PA489/4/48/1; PA489/5/16/1: PA1681/30/4. In 1875 the solicitor Thomas Browett (q.v.) consulted him about the building of "Westfield House", Radford (PA1681/30/11,12). Marriott had built the "Queen's Hotel", Hertford Street by 1885 (PA1681/77/2.IX,X,XII). He owned the "Rising Sun", Spon Street, 1888-96 (PA56/2/1; PA56/7/15.XXVI); 126 & 127, Much Park Street,1878-98 (PA56/3/1,2; PA56/7/15.XXV); the "George", Little Park Street, 1876-96 (CCA/2/3/113/30: PA56/5/1,2; PA56/7/15.XXVII); the "Salutation" estate at Much Park Street, 1856-57 (PA56/140/31,33,36). He was a Simon Norton's Charity trustee (PA56/7/13.XI: PA2865/1.I). Mortgagee of the "Exchange Vaults", Sheep Street, Rugby, 1888-96 (PA56/7/15.X); of Stoke Green closes, 1888 (PA56/20/10). He was a trustee of Phillips & Marriott, brewers, 1900 (PA56/7/61). Developed Stoneleigh Terrace, Warwick Road during the 1860s - see PA56/60/1; PA56/131-133 - and lived there [cf. White's 1874 directory]. He also developed other parts of the Butts district (PA56/61: PA56/69/2). Marriott and others purchased Little Close, Radford in 1848 - see PA56/102/3,4. Obtained and mortgaged 20 & 21, Smithford Street and 1-7, Barracks Place, 1862-63 (PA56/117/16-18). Detailed costs for developing Gosford Green land, 1853-54 (PA56/139/22,25-27).
