1820-1903. Beginning life as an engineer on the Birmingham & Gloucester Railway (1837-41) Spencer invented an invalid bed in 1866 but was primarily a philosopher who turned towards individualistic view of sociology in the 1850s; Spencer visited "Rosehill" and became well known to "George Eliot"; in 1885 he attacked the rising philosophical force of positivism.
