The collection was donated to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum on 11 January 1996; their receipt number is 001042. A E Fridlander (1840-1928) came to Coventry in 1858. He was a watchmaker by trade and a Liberal in politics being elected to the City Council in 1863. He knew George Eliot and talked to her about Jewish religion and history. He is said to have had an influence in the writing of "Daniel Deronda". Fridlander was also a financier and was on the Board of Triumph. This collection consists of the papers of one of A E Fridlander' s daughters, Annie. Notes re the Fridlanders, the Brays and Hennells with whom the Fridlanders were in contact are to be found at PA1861/4/17 below. Summary of contents 1. Letters, 1850s - c1940 2. Postcards, 1886 - 1934 3. Photographs, mid 19th century - early 20th century 4. Miscellaneous, c1882 - 1996 Note:- Some of the items donated to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum as part of this collection were retained there and some returned to them from the Archives. A full list of these is to be found at PA1861/4/18 below. In addition, a further 4 items were donated to the Herbert in 1998 (accession reference 1998/69): these were a wallet / visiting card case, a photograph of George Eliot and two photographs of an unidentified man.
