Birch is the eldest son and heir of the late James Birch of Coventry Esq and his wife Jane, nee Jane Owen, also deceased. Jane Owen was the only daughter and heir of Edward Owen the younger of Coventry, gentleman, deceased, and the granddaughter and heir of Edward Owen the elder of Coventry, capper and feltmaker, deceased. For £1787 10 shillings, of:- (1) messuage on the south side of Smithford Street, with warehouses, outbuildings etc heretofore occupied by Edward Owen, gentleman, deceased, afterwards of James Birch Esq, deceased, since of Alderman Edward Freeman, deceased, now of Jonathan Evans; and the passage from the garden to Vicar Lane. (The messuage was heretofore the estate of Edward Owen the elder, then Edward Owen the younger, and descended to George Birch as the eldest son and heir of his mother Jane Birch). (2) another messuage on the south side of Smithford Street between (1) above and the Kings Head Inn, heretofore occupied by Henry Cockram, afterwards John Goodall, then William Bagnall, sadler, since several other persons, late [-] Sharp, feltmaker deceased, now Mary Sharp, widow, and Thomas Sharp, feltmaker. This messuage was conveyed to James Birch in 1740 (see PA1896/11/1/9-10). (3) messuage heretofore used as an inn called the Turks Head on the west side of Warwick Lane or Greyfriars Lane, containing 4 bays of building, a little yard behind it, and a stable (2 bays of building), which property adjoins on its south side the land late of Thomas Dullison, belonging to the Red Lion Inn but now of William Watts, adjoining on the west to (1) above, and to land belonging to Trinity Church on the north. The premises were formerly in the tenure of Thomas Rew, afterwards Edward Wilmore, now of William Sayer. Originals 14, 15 Sep 1791; copy 1813.
