File relating to the Lady Godiva Cafe, Lower Precinct
CCA/3/1/14069
1957 - 1963
item
Coventry Archives & Research Centre
Correspondence relating to the construction of a circular cafe (Lady Godiva Cafe) and cross over canopy at Lower Precinct: costs, initial costs of equipment, appointment of WH Jones and Son Limited as contractors, etc. Also contains correspondence revealing that the Corporation encountered problems with its application to the Minister of Housing and Local Government over its loan sanction: it was the Corporation's contention that the cafe was an integral part of the Precinct, but the Minister decided that the cafe was not essential at a time of "unusual restrictions on local authority expenditure." (Letter to the Town Clerk, 13 December 1957). The Corporation's application to borrow the necessary money was approved in 1958. Includes plan.
